Howard Safir's Legacy

Commissioner Howard Safir’s career was defined by two unwavering commitments: a relentless drive to innovate and a profound devotion to the men and women who serve. From his early days at the Federal Bureau of Narcotics to his leadership at the DEA and U.S. Marshals Service, Safir was known for creative, high-impact operations that revitalized federal law enforcement.

As New York City’s Fire and Police Commissioner, Safir’s innovative spirit saved lives. He modernized the FDNY by introducing essential bunker gear to protect firefighters, and led the NYPD to historic reductions in crime. Throughout his 20+ years in the private sector and as a media commentator, Commissioner Safir remained a passionate advocate for safety, dignity, and excellence in serving and protecting the public.
